Freycinet - A Favourite

As local Tasmanians, we have been fortunate to be able to travel around our own state for most of the border closure period.

Even though the borders are now open, many of us here at TasVacations are still drawn to travel around Tasmania to discover those hidden gems.
One of those gems is the east coast of Tasmania - in particular, the Freycinet National Park. And hey, where else would you stay in the area other than the Freycinet Lodge?

Freycinet Lodge has been a destination I have gone back to several times over the years, and every time we visit feels like a special occasion.

Freycinet Lodge is in the Freycinet National Park, a 2 hour and 45-minute drive from Hobart, and a 2 hour and 15-minute drive from Launceston.
From Hobart you can either travel along the coast road for spectacular scenery or take the Midlands Highway for a more direct route with a detour via Lake Leake.

Arriving at Freycinet Lodge, you feel a calmness. With the surrounding bushland, granite peaks of the Hazards Mountain range and beautiful white sandy beaches, how could you not?
After checking in at the Lodge reception we headed to our room - a one room cabin: perfect for couples or a small family with 1 additional child on a sofa bed.
The rooms are spacious with an open lounge/bedroom area and a private balcony, some with coastal and bush views*.
There are also a number of other room types available from 2 Roomed Cabins, Premier Spa Cabins, and Coastal Pavilions.

There are many short walks accessible by foot or within a short drive from the Lodge. After we dropped our bags in our room, we travelled by car to Cape Tourville, which has spectacular views out to sea and as far as Wineglass Bay. This is a 20-minute round trip and offers an easy walking option for all ages and abilities.

Down the road there is Sleepy Bay - which is not so sleepy! With its rocky coastline and rough seas, it's quite active. If you don’t mind a few stairs and are relatively fit, keep walking past Sleepy Bay where you will find a beautiful cove - perfect for a picnic on the beach or to watch the day go by…
If you have more time, take a trek to Wineglass Bay Lookout for stunning views of Tassie’s most famous beach. This walk will take you up to 1.5 hours return and some bushwalking experience is recommended.

Arriving back at Freycinet Lodge, we headed to Hazards Bar & Lounge for an afternoon drink by the open fire overlooking the water. It sounds amazing, just talking about this experience!

There are a few different dining options available at the property for dinner, including a more relaxed bar menu at Hazard’s Bar & Lounge; a gourmet meal option at The Bay Restaurant specialising in fresh, local produce; even casual dining at Richardson’s Bistro.
As we were travelling with a small child, we opted for the casual dining option at Richardson’s Bistro where you can select from a range of burgers, seafood, steak, grazing plates, and desserts.
We decided to feast on local seafood whilst our son enjoyed a full bowl of pasta from the kid’s menu and ice cream for dessert. Overall, we walked away with very full tummies!!

In the morning we enjoyed breakfast at The Bay Restaurant which included a hot dish and a selection of fruit and pastries. A perfect end to our stay at the lodge!

Speaking of food! Whilst you are in the area I would recommend a visit to Freycinet Marine Farm, where the oysters and mussels are harvested fresh from their farm daily.
Their scallops, rocklobster and salmon are also sourced from local fisherman in the area, making it a perfect stop to feast on local seafood or to take away to enjoy at your next destination.

Whether you are looking for a relaxing getaway or a hiking adventure, Freycinet Lodge is the perfect base for your stay to explore this region.

Please note as Freycinet Lodge is located inside a National Park, a Parks Pass is required to stay at the property and to visit the National Park. Please contact TasVacations to organise your stay including National Parks Pass.

*Room views will differ, based on room type and location within the lodge.
